Another Rooftop Bar & Brewery is Coming Soon to Scott’s Addition!

Starr Hill Brewery is opening a beer hall and rooftop bar in Scott’s Addition.

The Charlottesville area-based brewery announced the new venture Wednesday and said the beer hall will open at 3406 W. Leigh St. this summer. The beer hall, which shares a building with Tazza Kitchen restaurant, will be over 4,500 square feet, plus a 3,000-square-foot rooftop bar and a 1,000-square-foot deck.

This will be the brewery’s third tasting room in Virginia. It also has locations in Crozet and Roanoke.

“Scott’s Addition was a natural choice for us as we planned our new expansion,” said Allie Hochman, general manager of the new Richmond location, in a statement.

“While it has become well-known for its eclectic craft beverage scene, the [Scott’s Addition] neighborhood has blossomed with a growing number of local restaurants, boutique shops, commercial businesses and thousands of new residents. We’re looking forward to collaborating with our neighbors and making a positive impact on this already thriving community.”

The Richmond location will focus on wild ales and will feature a 10-barrel brewing system and five American white oak foeders. Beers brewed on-site as well as Starr Hill staples from Crozet will be among 20 styles of beer offered daily.

“With the new pilot brewery and foeders in Richmond, there will be nearly no limit to our ability to experiment with different styles, including juicy, hazy IPAs, fruited brett sours, rich stouts and delicate pilsners and lagers,” said brewmaster Robbie O’Cain in a statement.

“Brewing wild sour styles on a big production system like we have in Crozet isn’t currently feasible, and to be able to add a facility with this potential is extremely exciting for our team. We are very much looking forward to sharing our creativity with the Richmond craft beer community.”

Starr Hill Richmond plans to work with local restaurants and food trucks to provide food service to the spot, plus host local artists and musicians in the space. It is working with 510 Architects for the architectural and design work. John Pritzlaff and Jenny Stoner of Cushman & Wakefield | Thalhimer handled the lease negotiations on behalf of Starr Hill Brewery, and Amy Broderick and Mac Wilson represented the landlord, Thalhimer Realty Partners Inc.

“Starr Hill’s opening of the Beer Hall & Rooftop reinforces our vision of fostering a versatile mix of amenities in Scott’s Addition,” said Matt Raggi, principal of Thalhimer Realty Partners, the development arm of Henrico County-based commercial real estate firm Cushman & Wakefield | Thalhimer.

Thalhimer Realty Partners bought the 106,000-square-foot warehouse building covering nearly an entire city block in 2016. In addition to Tazza Kitchen, tenants include software developer Cloudbees and The Community Foundation, which relocated its headquarters there from Chesterfield County in November.

“As the neighborhood continues to grow, we’re excited to add a community-driven business like Starr Hill that will invest their resources and energy into making Scott’s Addition even stronger,” Raggi said. “Their music and cultural history, combined with brewing expertise, make Starr Hill a perfect addition to the neighborhood.”

Scott’s Addition is home to nearly a dozen breweries, cideries and distilleries, including Ardent Craft Ales, The Veil Brewing Co., Väsen Brewing Co. and Blue Bee Cider.

Starr Hill Brewery was founded in Charlottesville in 1999 and today is the largest craft brewer in Virginia. Its headquarters and main taproom is in Crozet, and it has a Pilot Brewery & Side Stage taproom in Roanoke.
